The National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) North-South was set up by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) in 2001. It was created in the understanding that development research and cooperation are matters of primary concern to Switzerland. The NCCR North-South is funded by the SNSF, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, and the participating institutions. Please visit www.north-south.unibe.ch for further information.

Global Change and Sustainable Development: A Synthesis of Regional Experiences from Research Partnerships: The latest volume in the NCCR North-South Perspectives Series presents 36 peer-reviewed articles written by interdisciplinary teams of authors who reflected on results of development-oriented research conducted from 2001 to 2008, guided by principles of sustainability. The book can be ordered at nccr-north-south(at)cde.unibe.ch (price: CHF 45.00 or EUR 30.00, excl. postage) or downloaded free of charge.

The NCCR North-South has established a worldwide research network including seven institutional partners in Switzerland and some 190 research centres, universities and development organisations in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Approximately 400 researchers worldwide contribute to the activities of the NCCR North-South.

NCCR North-South supports research on issues relating to sustainable development, particularly in developing and transition countries, but also in Switzerland. The most salient features of the program are:

  • North-South partnerships for scientific research
  • Integration of disciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research
  • Interactive exchange of development research and practice

Research conducted under the auspices of the NCCR North-South is coordinated so as to allow for policy-oriented comparative analysis of pathways and potentials for mitigating the effects of global change that hinder sustainable development.

As a contribution toward the strengthening of research capacities in partner regions, the NCCR North-South also conducts a programme of regional and interregional education and training workshops.

The Centre of Development and Environment (CDE) is the leading house of the NCCR North-South.  It is host to the programme's Management Centre and coordinates research on the theme of natural resource management.
