Simulation games
Simulation games are training tools very well suited for the creation of an inspiring and interactive learning environment. The games simulate complex realities and problem constellations that have to be dealt with in teams. Developed for diverse thematic fields, simulation games make specific dynamics and relevant factors in the problem context tangible for players. As team members, players learn to develop problem-solving strategies, negotiate with their counterparts, plan short- and long-term measures, seek a balance between individual and collective interests- and try to find strategies for adapting to changing framework conditions. Negotiation processes – within one's own team and between different parties - are a key element in the game's dynamic. Enhanced practical knowledge and social competence are at the heart of the learning process.
A debriefing session helps to integrate what has been experienced and learnt during the game. A facilitator leads this systematic reflection process, in which, based on experience in the game, players draw parallels to experiences they have had in the professional or private lives. Debriefing provides a basis for applying what has been learned in the game to daily life.
When integrated in capacity building, games are used …
- … to introduce a new topic, as they convey an initial overview of relations, links, and dynamics, and make complexity easier to grasp.
- … to identify key aspects for training, as the course of the game and the debriefing reveal already acquired knowledge as well as gaps in knowledge.
- … to create a common reference framework (the shared game experience) for subsequent discussions.
- … to test knowledge newly acquired in a training course.
The following games are currently available:
