Web-based Geographic Information Systems are an innovative and seminal method of data sharing and exchange. By means of a WebGIS, a wide range of datasets can be made available to a broad audience for visualising, analysing, querying, and mapping purposes. CDE is developing the Web-based GIS tools listed below:

Pamir WebGIS
The database, covering the Pamir and the Alai
mountains, was designed on the occasion of
the Pamir strategy (2002-2003).

Socio-economic Atlas for Lao PDR
(available online by June 2008)
The database, based on the 1999 population
and housing census, includes data and
statistics available at commune level. It thus
gives a detailed picture of spatial patterns
in population, education, and living conditions.

Tajikistan Geo-database
(projected)
CDE was mandated by the Worldbank to
generate a spatial database on land
degradation and to train Tajik counterparts in
geoinformation services. This data will be
availed through a web-based tool.

Songwe Information System SIS
(projected)
CDE is providing GIS backstopping to the
World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in the Songwe
Trans-boundary River Basin (Tanzania -
Malawi). A web-based GIS on the Songwe
Basin is envisaged.
