Policy                           Research                          Implementation

Switzerland has supported bilateral and multilateral peace-building measures in Sudan since 1994. Approaches used by divisions of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, the Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport, and the Swiss Agency for Development and Coop-eration, as well as research institutions concerned with security policy in Geneva (Graduate Institute of international Studies), Bern (NCCR/Swiss-peace) and Zürich (ETHZ) were offered to help overcome current im-passes.

CDE’s engagement
Early in 2002 CDE laid the foundation for conflict management in the Nuba Mountains by providing updated demarcation and geo-hydrological maps of the Nuba Mountains. This was followed in 2004 by comprehen-sive geospatial databases and thematic maps to support peace missions undertaken by the international community in Darfur, Abyei and Southern Sudan. In the last three years CDE’s Sudan programme has gradually shifted to reconstruction activities with a focus on development of geo-information infrastructures in support of the Fifth Population Census and in capacity development projects in geoinformation management run by the government, UN organisations, and INGOs.

Our new web site
The present site represents the completion of an eight-year engagement on the part of CDE in the context of Swiss development cooperation in Sudan; moreover, it is a comprehensive revision of the very successful “Sudan Map Download Site” that has so far been used as a source of information by more than 150,000 customers. Reports, hard copy maps, digital map files and individually compiled desktop maps are now all available. The product likely to be of greatest use to professional users – the referenced and partly validated geodata – is also available for down-loading here as compressed files. Additional information about the pro-gramme, partner links, and the people involved can also be found on this site.

Welcome to our new site!
