WOCAT’s vision is that land and livelihoods are improved through sharing and enhancing knowledge about sustainable land management (SLM).

WOCAT’s mission is to support innovation and decision-making processes in sustainable land management, particularily in connection with soil and water conservation (SWC). This is done by

  • connecting stakeholders,
  • analysing and synthesising experiences and setting direction,
  • enhancing capacity and knowledge,
  • developing and applying standardized tools for documenting, monitoring, evaluating, sharing and using knowledge.

WOCAT's target group is SLM specialists:

  • at the field level, including agricultural advisors, project implementers, and land users,
  • at the (sub-)national level, including planners, project designers, decision makers, and researchers,
  • at the regional and global levels, including international programme planners, and donors.

WOCAT has developed an internationally recognised standardised methodology. The provided tools consist of three comprehensive questionnaires, a database and mapping system, guidelines, standardised case study presentations, etc.

WOCAT operates in a decentralised manner through regional and national initiatives. All participating institutions of the WOCAT network meet annually for the international WOCAT workshop and steering meeting (WWSM). The global management is responsible for the overall coordination and development of WOCAT and currently consists of CDE, FAO and ISRIC.

Core funding comes from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). Additional funding is provided by participating institutions in the consortium (FAO, UNEP DANIDA, Syngenta Foundation, etc.).
