Tourism in Mountain Regions: Hopes, Fears, and Realities
Mountain regions around the world are important tourist destinations. Virtually everywhere, tourists acknowledge the special qualities and attraction of mountains areas. For many mountain communities, tourism has become a vital economic resource, generating jobs and incomes and supporting traditional systems that otherwise face acute economic pressures.
Yet mountain tourism also bears the potential to erode the natural and cultural resources on which it thrives. In mountain areas across the globe, private and public actors are working hard – at the local, national, and regional level – to develop and implement projects that foster more sustainable and equitable development by protecting and even enhancing mountain regions’ natural and cultural assets.
This publication, featuring 28 case studies from many mountain regions, provides an overview of the challenges of tourism in mountains – whether sociocultural, socio-economic, environmental, or sociopolitical – and sheds light on the innovative strategies developed by mountain communities to cope with these challenges.
It features lessons learned and recommendations of use to policymakers, development experts, businesses, and academics involved in the development of tourism in mountain areas. It aims to enable mountain communities to learn from each other’s experiences by sharing innovative, inspirational ideas from around the world that further promote sustainable forms of mountain tourism.
