The International Graduate School (IGS) North-South is a doctorate programme dedicated to providing a full-scope training for PhD candidates to support the study and advancement of global sustainable development.

Based on an inter-university agreement between the Universities of Basel, Bern, Lausanne and Zurich as well as global partners, such as the CETRAD in Kenya or the CSRS in Côte d'Ivoire, the IGS North-South emphasizes on an integrative, partnership-based research approach. The programme offers inter- and transdisciplinary courses, peer-learning opportunities, transformative teaching methods and a unique, hands-on Summer School course with local experts and stakeholders. Through these means, the IGS North-South builds and empowers a community of currently about 100 active PhD candidates and 270 alumni from all over the world to shape a sustainable future.

Upon successful completion, candidates earn the IGS North-South certificate of "Specialization in Sustainable Development," confirming their commitment to address pressing global challenges in an inter- and transdisciplinary setting, besides their dedication to their specific field of research.
