Increasing the Effectiveness of Transdisciplinary Research for Sustainable Development

In the face of increasingly severe problems of global change, scientists must produce knowledge that helps to advance sustainable resource governance. Sustainability scientists generally agree that producing such knowledge requires transdisciplinary research. However, transdisciplinary research remains a challenging endeavour. Against this background, the overall goal of this project is to increase the effectiveness of transdisciplinary research.

Approach

The overall goal of the project shall be achieved by jointly developing a larger research proposal based on a learning process between actors involved in transdisciplinary research. We are bringing together participants from transdisciplinary projects, funding programmes, and support bodies to meet and reflect on what must be done to increase the effectiveness of transdisciplinary research for sustainable development. Moreover, to examine the experiences of research programmes in facilitating transdisciplinary research, we are conducting a study of two programmes: (1) the Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) North-South, which was co-funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC); and (2) the SNSF National Research Programme (NRP) 61 on sustainable management of water.
