How can 1 billion people suffer from chronic hunger in a world of abundant resources? David Syz, former Swiss State Secretary for Economic Affairs, investigates this and related questions in his film “Hunger in a World of Plenty”. A screening of the film that took place on 9 May in Bern was accompanied by a panel discussion featuring experts from CDE, the World Trade Institute, NCCR Trade Regulation, and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.
The film takes viewers from the US farm belt to agricultural lands in Switzerland, Senegal, and Ethiopia in a worldwide search for answers to key questions like: How do subsidies from the Western world influence hunger? What is the role of commodities speculation in food pricing? What does the African farmer's daily fight against hunger look like?
After the film, the panel of experts on food security offered their own views on the answers to such questions.
