Mountain societies in Central Asia have experienced systemic economic, political, social, and environmental changes since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, confronting them with accentuated development challenges as well as promising opportunities. This special issue of MRD helps to fill recognised gaps and expose blind spots in knowledge and sustainable development practice for Central Asian mountain societies. It provides natural and social science analysis of current realities and assesses interesting development practices. Five articles address the topic of pasture governance and use in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, while three other articles focus on livelihood challenges, pathways, and opportunities for households in Kyrgyzstan and Afghanistan’s Badakhshan province. Further topics include adaptation to climate change in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan and reconciling sustainable development with wildlife conservation in Pakistan. The Mountain Societies Research Centre of the University of Central Asia served as guest editor of this special issue.
