New book: Reshaping Rural Extension

20/06/2011
Written by Ernst Gabathuler, Felicitas Bachmann, and Andreas Kläy, this book presents Learning for Sustainability (LforS) as an integrative, learning-oriented approach to rural extension. The approach encompasses stakeholder dialogues, knowledge management, and organisational development. The authors describe development and application of various LforS strategies to support small-scale farmers, from awareness raising, capacity building, and social mobilisation to monitoring and evaluation of outcomes.
Two case studies are presented, as well as a selection of appropriate methods and tools for shaping learning processes. LforS goes beyond production-related aspects to address livelihood issues more broadly. With its focus on learning processes, LforS seeks to improve people’s understanding of the links between different spheres and different levels of decision-making.
The book is directed towards governmental and non-governmental organisations, development agencies, and extension staff working in the field of rural development.
